Developed in the 1940s by the American psychologist William Herbert Sheldon, the Somatotype tried to link a human’s physiology with its psychology. But his theory was later dismissed as “quackery”. So this kind of classification is rather outdated.
But his views on the body itself weren’t completely wrong; finding out about your body type can still give you great insight.
It’s good to know which body type you are since it can determine how your diet or workout routine should look like. But the following body types aren’t set in stone. Most people aren’t one pure body type, but rather a mix.
Endomorphs are rather big-boned people that gain fat and muscles fast. They are generally shorter than others, have a rounder physique, and slow metabolism. To keep fat gain at a minimum, they should do a lot of cardio.
Ectomorphs are generally thin and, most of the time, tall people with small shoulders and a lean muscle mass. They find it hard to gain muscle mass and weight due to their fast metabolism. Most of the time, ectomorphs can eat almost anything without gaining weight. They should do a lot of weight training.
Mesomorphs are between ectomorphs and endomorphs. They are generally athletic and have well-defined muscles. Most of the time, they are considered strong people that gain muscle mass quickly while still don’t obtain fat too fast.
This is by no means a professional way to find out what your body type is. In addition, this kind of classification is said to be very outdated.
