✍️ May 2, 2024Consider yourself a Potterhead? Love a fun drinking game that involves a little competition and some drinks? Combine the best of both worlds with the “Quidditch Pong”!
“Quidditch Pong” is inspired by the beloved sport from the Harry Potter series, but with a twist! Instead of broomsticks and golden snitches, you’ll use pong balls and cups filled with your favorite drinks.
So, put on some Hogwarts robes, and get ready to play!
How to play “Quidditch Pong” Drinking Game
“Quidditch Pong” is played similarly to traditional “Beer Pong”, but with a few magical twists. Here’s what you’ll need to play:
- A ping-pong table or any long table that can serve as a playing surface
- 10 solo cups (+2 more for water cups)
- 1 ping pong ball per 2 players
- 1 (optional) golden snitch
- Beer or alcohol of your choice
- At least two to six players
1. Set it up
Setting up “Quidditch Pong” is similar to traditional beer pong. Just place a 10-cup rack on each side of the table and fill each cup with beer or alcohol. To make things more interesting, you can also use different drinks in each cup.
Fill up the water cups, and if you want to use the optional final-cup rule, in which only the Snitch can be used, glue wings onto one of your ping-pong balls and color it gold (for the Snitch).
2. Sort into teams
Put on the Sorting Hat, if you will! Players of the “Quidditch Pong” game can either choose teams based on which Hogwarts house they identify with or by drawing names from a hat. Make sure to have an equal number of players on both teams.
3. Play the game
The rules of “Quidditch Pong” are similar to traditional Beer Pong, but with a few magical touches. The goal of the game is to be the first side to reach 100 total points and win. The amount of points that a cup is worth varies by special rules:
- 10 points: For using your bludgers to swat a ball illegally, or if you knock your cup over.
- 10 points: For a regular make.
- 10 points: Once per game per team a player can, instead of shooting, call for a shot of Felix Felicis (liquor) and automatically receive 10 points instead of shooting their shot.
- 20 points: For making a shot through any of the three goals, which can be legally swatted by the other team’s bludgers (hands).
- 20 points: For bounce shots that go in, which can also be defended by the other team’s bludgers.
- 20 points: If you score three shots in a row, you drink a Gurding Potion. You now have extra endurance and shoot until you miss, each shot counting as 20 points.
Aside from using your bludgers defensively (to block 20-point shots), you can also cast Wingardium Leviosa and blow out a shot that is spinning (before it stops in the water).
Whoever scores the Golden Snitch (the final cup) in “Quidditch Pong” gets 150 points and ends the game immediately.
“Quidditch Pong” Drinking Game Rules
“Quidditch Pong” has a magical twist to it, which makes it more fun! Here are some general rules fellow Potterheads can follow:
1. Spell casting:
Each team is allowed four spells per game, two per teammate. Spells must be called before shooting, and the spell being cast depends on whether or not the shot is made.
If the shot misses, the spell cast still counts against the team’s total spells. Here is a list of “Quidditch Pong” spells:
- Accio: You may move a single cup to any spot on the table. (Excluding the Snitch)
- Badazzling Hex: On your next turn, your balls become invisible. You can bounce/shoot through the goal, and your victims can’t see (can’t block).
- Cave Inimicum: Re-rack the cups on your side, making it harder for your opponents.
- Confingo: The cups that were hit also take out the closest cup with them (must be touching), totaling 20 points on the turn (if made).
- Confundo: Opponents become confused. Their next shots must be trick shots.
- Conjunctivitis Curse: Opponents become blind on their next turn and shoot with closed eyes.
- Deprimo: You can blow away the opponent’s shots from mid-air on their next turn.
- Engorgio: Make a cup of your choosing larger (replace solo cup with larger cup). (Excludes Snitch)
- Episkey: Add a cup back to the rack you are shooting at, and your opponents choose where to place it.
- Evanesco: Remove one cup on your side (only usable once per game). It can be used to remove any cup, including Snitch.
- Expelliarmus: One opponent loses one spell.
- FiendFyre Curse: Causes victim’s cups to catch fire. Every four shots the opponents miss, they lose another cup. For every three shots your team misses, you lose one cup.
- Finite Incantatem: This ability removes any spell or curse in play or protects you from one spell of your choosing until the end of “Quidditch Pong”.
- Flame-Freezing Charm: Causes fire to become harmless (fire from a successful FiendFyre Curse).
- Imperio: You control your opponent’s next shot, deciding how they shoot it on their following turn.
- Jelly Legs Jinx: Victims can’t use their legs, and must shoot their next shot while sitting on the ground.
- Lumos: Blind victims with any light on their next turn.
- Reducio: Make any cup smaller on your side. (Excludes Snitch)
- Refilling Charm: The cup made never goes away and must be refilled each time it’s made. (can be removed by the opposing team’s Evanesco spell)
- Reparo: Re-rack your cups into a formation of your choosing.
- Tarantallegra: Make an opponent dance until after their next shot is taken.
2. Shuffle the drinks:
Each team in “Quidditch Pong” is allowed to shuffle the drinks at any time. This means that a team can choose to make a 10-pointer worth 20 for their cups and then choose which cup gets that bonus.
3. Drink up!
If you hit an opponent’s bludger (hand) during one of your legal shots, this forces them to drink from their cup.
4. Take extra shots:
If you and your teammate make your shot in the same turn, one of the players can take another shot, but it must be a different cup from the one they just made.
5. Switch sides:
Teams can switch sides after every game (just like in traditional Beer Pong). This also gives each team a chance to use their spells in different ways.
6. Play with Muggle-friendly names:
For those who aren’t familiar with the Harry Potter series, you can always replace the spell names with more generic terms such as “Move,” “Block,” and “Switch.” This makes it more accessible for everyone to play and understand.
7. Have fun!
Remember, “Quidditch Pong” is meant to be enjoyed with friends and loved ones. Don’t take it too seriously and just have a good time!
So gather your closest wizarding pals, grab some butterbeer or any other drink of your choice, and let the magic of “Quidditch Pong” begin! If you enjoy this game, be sure to check out “Stack Cup” and “Slap Cup”, other fun variations of traditional beer pong. Accio cups!
