What does Netflix and Chill mean?

What comes to your mind when you hear the term Netflix & Chill? Are you thinking of a cozy movie night on the couch with a blanket and pizza? Or do you think of a hot date with your crush, which potentially could lead to sexual activities? Both are legitimate. Although, most of you will probably think of the latter statement.

We wonder since when the term Netflix & Chill has become a synonym for sexual activities. Everyone knows what it means. However, do you actually know how you know it? We do not. That’s why we’re going back in time to better understand the magical world of Netflix and Chill.

The story of Netflix and Chill

Netflix and Chill was first mentioned in a non-sexual context in January 2009 in a Twitter post by “NoFaceNina” (La Shanda Rene Foster):

“I’m about to log onto Netflix and chill for the rest of the night.”

Originally, the term had no sexual meaning, but simply referred to a cozy movie night.

In mid-2014, the term Netflix and Chill became more and more common in the African-American black twitter community. “Chill” was written in italics to make the sexual meaning clear (see Wikipedia).

Definition of Netflix and Chill

In April 2015, there was the first definition of Netflix and Chill in the Urban Dictionary by the user “laxbuhl7”.

“code for two people going to each others houses and fucking or doing other sexual related acts”

Soon there were more and more people who published their definitions of Netflix and Chill in the Urban Dictionary. Here are a few more popular definitions:

“It means that you are going to go over to your partners house and fuck with Netflix in the background” (2015, by Octipimpslap).

Sharknado

Sharknado is a trash film at its finest that deals with sharks flying in tornadoes that devastate Los Angeles. Rotten Tomatoes describes the film as “shamelessly and gloriously brainless”. Sharknado gives the phrase “so bad it’s good” a new meaning.

50 First Dates is a comedy movie from 2004 starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. The movie is about Lucy (Drew Barrymore), who suffers from amnesia due to an accident. Every day she forgets what happened on the previous day. Building a relationship is pretty difficult under these circumstances. The film tells a heartwarming and humorous story that creates a romantic atmosphere.

Paranormal Activity

The first movie of Paranormal Activity is about a couple observing paranormal phenomena in their home. The film Paranormal Activity consists of a collection of videos from a security camera. This makes the story seem even more real. Paranormal Activity is perfect for a Netflix and Chill Date because the story is not really demanding, but it still creates a good scare. And, as we know, scare leads to physical contact. 😏

Lost in Translation

Scarlett Johansan and Bill Murray are a dream couple in the film “Lost in Translation”. Even if the age difference between the two actors is a little terrifying (Scarlett was only 17 years old at the time). The story is both romantic and a little melancholic. Coppola, the director, received an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 2004.

The Big Lebowski

Unfortunately, the movie is currently not available on Netflix, but it is on Amazon Prime. Maybe you can make an exception and do “Amazon Prime & Chill” instead of Netflix & Chill. The movie “The Big Lebowski”, released in 1998, is about a guy who happens to have the same name as a multimillionaire and therefore gets into big trouble.
