This game is similar to Shot Roulette, another drinking game twist on Russian Roulette. The main difference between Shot Roulette and Vodka Roulette is that players don’t need a wheel or “roulette” when playing with the latter.
How to Play “Vodka Roulette”
Playing “Vodka Roulette” is simple and intuitive. Here’s everything you’ll need:
- Shot glasses for each player
- Vodka or any other clear spirit
- Two or more players
- Bottle
Have every player sit in a circle and place the shot glasses in the middle. Fill all but one glass with water, then fill that remaining glass with vodka. You’re good to go!
1. Decide who goes first
You can choose the youngest player with the closest birthday or spin a bottle to determine who goes first. Then, as a group, decide which direction the game will go in (clockwise or counterclockwise).
2. Spin the bottle
The first player gets to spin the bottle in the middle of the circle, inside the circle of the shot glasses. Whoever the bottle points to when it stops, that player will pick a shot glass and drink the contents.
If it’s water: That player is safe, and it is the next person’s turn to spin. If it’s vodka: That player must take a shot of the vodka and refill the glass with Vodka, and they are out of the game.
3. Keep spinning
“Vodka Roulette” continues with each player taking turns spinning the bottle and drinking whatever shot glass it lands on. The game ends when there is only one player left who hasn’t taken the vodka shot.

1. Prepare the alcohol.
Fill as many shot glasses as there are players with water, except for one, which should be filled with vodka or any other clear spirit.
2. Mix it up!
Mix up the shot glasses so nobody knows which glass the vodka is in.
3. Bottoms up!
Everybody has to take a shot glass and down their shot with all the other players.
4. The player who got the shot glass is the loser of the round.
They can’t participate in the next round.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 until one player is left.
The last remaining player becomes the winner. As a reward, the winner can hand out shots to three other players.
Tip: If you want to take a break from drinking vodka, you can play Water Roulette in between rounds. Water Roulette is the non-alcoholic version of “Vodka Roulette”. Instead of filling glasses with vodka, you can fill them with water.
6. Add dares!
To make “Vodka Roulette” even more exciting and daring, you can add dares for each player to complete after taking their shot. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Make a dance move
- Sing a song
- Tell an embarrassing story
- Take another shot (if you’re feeling brave)
7. Include a “pass and double it to the next person” option
Add soda or juice to the game and fill one glass with it. The player who gets this glass can “pass and double it” to the next person, meaning they can choose another player who will have to take two shots instead of one.
