Roman naming conventions

Roman naming conventions were actually quite complex. Originally, the first name was the praenomen, which was given to a child by their parents and was used to identify them. The second name was the nomen, which denoted the individual’s clan or family. The third name was the cognomen, which identified them within their clan.

But it also differed between men and women. Women usually kept their father’s nomen, while men took their mother’s. In some cases, a man might also take his father’s nomen if it was more prestigious. Additionally, instead of three names, women usually only had two.
