BONUS: The Simpsons Trivia Facts

Enough about the challenge, here are some interesting facts about The Simpsons that you may or may not have known about!

1. Homer actually came close to finding the Higgs Boson.

In the episode “The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace” in season 10, Homer wrote a certain equation on the chalkboard. The results of one of those formulae are 777 GeV (gigaelectronvolts) and are pretty close to the actual mass of the Higgs Boson, which is 125 GeV.

2. Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart Simpson) is the honorary mayor in her LA neighborhood.

In 2005, Nancy Cartwright, resident of Northridge California, was given the honorary mayorship of Northridge California.

3. The Simpsons made pretty accurate predictions.

For example, in Season 05’s episode “$pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling),” two magicians (with a prominent German accent) are attacked by their white tiger. These two were clear parodies of Siegfried and Roy, a Las Vegas act. Ten years later, a white tiger attacked Roy during their performance.

4. Paul McCartney’s Lentil Soup Recipe was mentioned in The Simpsons.

This was mentioned by Lisa the Vegetarian, who was voiced by Linda McCartney back in season 07. At the end of the episode, “Maybe I’m Amazed” is playing over the closing credits. If the recording is reversed, you’ll hear that the mumbling on the track is Paul reciting the recipe for a vegetarian lentil soup.

5. Danny Elfman, the composer of the show’s opening theme song, took three days to compose it.

He calls it the most popular piece of music that he made in his entire career.

6. Springfield was named for its generic Anywhereness.

There are Springfields everywhere in the U.S. In fact, there are about Springfields in over 30 states in America.

7. The Simpsons were made yellow for a good reason.

The characters were made yellow to make the show stand out (along with its ads) when someone was flipping through the TV while looking for something to watch.

8. The Simpsons’ names are based on real people.

Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, chose character names after his own family members. Except for “Bart,” which he substituted for his own name.

9. Hank Azaria voiced over 16 recurring characters.

This includes Moe the bartender, Chief Wiggum, Comic Book Guy, Apu (convenience store owner), and many others!

10. You can find “D’Oh” in the Oxford English Dictionary.

It was added in 2001 and it means “used to comment on a foolish or stupid action, especially one’s own.”

11. Some details in the show are changed depending on where it’s being aired.

For example, in Arabic episodes, Homer is made to drink sodas instead of beer, and he also eats Egyptian beef sausages instead of the usual hotdog. This is to abide by Islamic customs.

12. One episode takes about 6-8 months to create.

This is because all animations are still hand-drawn instead of using a computer and modern technology. This is also why the show rarely comments on current events.

13. The extended couch gag in the opening depends on how long the episode is.

If the episode is shorter than normal, the couch gag is extended. It really depends on how long the whole episode is.

14. Only God has five fingers (in Simpsons of course).

All characters on the show are given 4 singers, and the only person to have 5 fingers is God.

The Simpsons is truly a beloved and iconic animated show that has captured the hearts of viewers for decades. With its witty humor, clever references, and lovable characters, it’s no wonder why it remains one of the longest-running TV shows in history.
