Bonus: The Lord of the Rings Trivia Facts

As a little bonus, we’ve gathered 10 of the most fascinating facts about The Lord of the Rings of which we are sure you’ll enjoy!

1. Actor Viggo Mortensen is a badass

Can you remember the scene in which Aragorn kicked an Uruk-Hai’s helmet and screamed? Unfortunately, that scream was not an act: Actor Viggo Mortensen broke two of his toes when kicking the hard metal. But instead of breaking character, he took advantage of the pain of the broken bones and screamed, which suited the scene perfectly.

2. Sam’s mockup pony

Sam’s pony wasn’t a real one; in fact, it was actually two people in a costume.

3. The Lord of the Rings was almost a single movie

The script for The Lord of the Rings trilogy went through a lot of revisions. Initially, the movie adaptation was meant to be only two instead of three movies! However, producers even tried to convince Jackson into making it into a single film because of the ballooning budget. Thank goodness that didn’t happen, and the producers could be convinced otherwise.

4. Actor Viggo Mortensen is a badass part 2

Viggo Mortensen not only broke his toes. He also lost part of a tooth during a fight scene. However, he insisted that they superglued it back on so they could keep on working.

5. Saruman was almost Gandalf

Initially, Christopher Lee wanted to play Gandalf. But sooner or later, he realized that he was too old to play such an action-heavy part.

6. Sean Bean was reading his script during a shot

In the Council of Elrond, Sean Bean was reading his script. Since the script was changed so many times, often the night before shooting, it was tough to keep track of what to say or not to say. That’s why Sean Bean had the script taped to his knee during his infamous speech of “One does not simply walk into Mordor.”

7. Elijah Wood “cosplayed” for his role

For his audition tape, Elijah Wood created his own Hobbit costume and cosplayed in the woods. He certainly did a good job. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have gotten the role!

8. Murderous Frodo

Initially, Frodo was meant to kill Gollum in the movie adaptation. In one scene, Frodo pushed Gollum into Mount Doom, but they later reshot that scene since it was very un-Tolkien-like.

9. Bearded ladies

A lot of the Riders of Rohan were, in fact, women with beards. Since New Zealand had so many good female riders, they wanted to take advantage of that.

10. Only one actor really met Tolkien

Christopher Lee was the only person involved in the films that actually met Tolkien once. He was a big fan and stated that he had read the books once every year of his life until he passed away in 2015.
