What is Charades?

Charades is an all-time classic parlor game that originated in France way back in the 16th century. It was originally a riddle game that the French adults play to entertain themselves after dinner. It became even more popular to the Edwardians and Victorians in Britain as a way to spice up their evening.

The word “charade” was first used in 1776. The first truest objective and purpose of the game, in the psychological sense, is to create the awareness that emotion, identity and social environment can be relayed and conveyed through actions and facial expressions. We don’t always have to use our words.

Later on it became widely known in the entire world and has been a popular source of entertainment for households, families, friends, colleagues and pretty much everyone.

The game can be used as an icebreaker during classes and meetings or an actual parlor game for kids and adults during parties.

How To Play Charades

Before you play the game, you should prepare a list of words to be used for each round. Write the words in strips of paper. Another alternative would be to use a word generator or just simply use our online Charades App to make things easier!

The main game rules for Charades are pretty easy and simple to follow. The goal is for players to guess the words/phrases acted out by a volunteer player within a given number of minutes (usually 2-3 minutes). The volunteer is not allowed to make any sound, utter any word or point to any object. A correct guess corresponds to a point/score.

How To Play Charades with Teams

When playing in teams, each group should have one volunteer per round. Each group takes alternating turns in letting their volunteer pick out a strip from a box and then act out the word to help his teammates guess it.

How To Play Charades for Kids

Charades is a game for all ages. When kids play this game, the adults who supervise usually use child-friendly and easier words for them to guess. The same steps and rules apply as the original game of Charades. Except maybe the number of minutes given for each round. It’s usually longer to give the children more time to think and guess the words.

This game will enhance their awareness of emotion and ideas expressed through actions and facial expressions instead of them communicated verbally.

How To Play Charades for Adults

For the adults, more complicated words, ideas and even phrases are being used since the experience and knowledge of the players are expected to be more vast and of the next level. Timing and scoring are most essential and are stricter than ever as some players can be quite competitive in Charades.

In all versions of the game, the teams and players play until one team has reached and garnered the agreed upon winning score or until you get tired of playing Charades.

Best Charades Ideas

The most annoying part in playing an unprepared Charades game is thinking of the words or phrases for every round. You want to choose words and phrases that are interesting but not too easy nor too hard to guess. It can be frustrating and boring to wait for a few minutes before the other team is able to choose a word so make sure to prepare yours in advance before the next rounds.
