How to Play the Imposter Game
The Imposter Game is a word-based bluffing game where players describe a secret word—without giving it away. One player doesn’t know the word and must fake it convincingly.
1. Everyone draws a card
Each player draws one card on the phone using an imposter game online tool or imposter game word generator.
- All normal players receive the same secret word
- One random player becomes the Imposter and receives no word
After viewing their role, players are instructed to pass the phone to the next person.
2. The timer starts
Once everyone has drawn, a countdown timer begins. From this point on, no one can check the word again—memory and bluffing only.
3. Take turns saying one word
Going around the group, each player says exactly one word related to the secret word.
- Normal players try to sound convincing without being obvious
- The Imposter tries to guess the vibe and blend in
No sentences. No explanations. One word only.
4. Discuss and accuse
Before time runs out, players can:
- Question suspicious answers
- Ask players to repeat with another word
- Debate who they think the Imposter is
The Imposter can attempt to guess the secret word at any time.
5. The game ends when…
The Imposter Game ends when one of the following happens:
- The Imposter correctly guesses the secret word
- The group agrees on who the Imposter is
- The timer runs out
Then you reshuffle and start again.
Rules for Playing the Imposter Game
Keep the game fair and tense by sticking to these rules:
1. One word only
Each turn, players may say exactly one word—no sentences, no gestures.
2. No repeating words
Once a word has been said, it cannot be repeated during that round.
3. No direct synonyms
Avoid using the secret word itself or very obvious synonyms.
4. Imposter guesses once
The Imposter typically gets one final guess at the secret word.
5. Majority vote
If the group agrees on the Imposter, they must reveal themselves.
