Starting a conversation with someone is an important social skill for teenagers.
It can be difficult to know what to say, but there are many ways you can approach the person and start talking to them! One way that often works is by introducing yourself or asking them about themselves. You could also try small talk before moving into something more personal, like asking questions about their hobbies or interests.
Just remember not to come off as too intense—a little goes a long way! And don’t forget: it’s okay if they don’t want to talk back! There will always be another opportunity in the future. If you’re worried because this person seems unapproachable, just remember: It takes two people to have a conversation!
How to make small talk
It’s not always easy to start a conversation with someone, but it can make your social life a lot better if you do. Here are some tips on starting a conversation when you don’t know them at all or very well:
1. Introduce yourself: For example, say “Hi, I’m __.”
2. Do small talk about the environment or something that’s happening in the area: For example, “Hey, it sure is hot today,” or “What do you think about how loud it is here?”
3. Ask them about themselves: For example, “What school do you go to?” or “What did you think about the movie we just saw?”
1. Ask them about themselves
The best way to start a conversation with someone you don’t know is by asking them about themselves. You can ask people what school they go to, what profession they have, or if their name says anything about their heritage.
These questions are very easy and comfortable because the other person gets a chance to talk and share about themselves and think of something interesting — while it’s usually pretty difficult for you too! Are you looking for some questions? Here you can find 100 Questions to Ask to Get to Know Someone!
For example: I think I only saw you recently. Could it be that we go to the same school?
It’s also always good to ask questions about their interests since that will help break the ice. And don’t forget to listen well - people love when other people care enough to ask how their day was or what they think of an important current event!
You may need to pick an area that interests you in order for this conversation starter to work. For example, you could be interested in old movies like Casablanca or Citizen Kane . Then can say something like “Hello” and follow-up with “What do think of Citizen Kane?” Or if you like newer movies, you could say something like “I saw The Avengers. It was great!”
They might say, for example, “I loved it”, or they might say that it wasn’t good at all even. Depending on what he / she replies, you can then discuss the film. If you’re looking for great questions to ask, check out our article with 250+ Great Conversation Starters!
2. Introduce yourself to the person
Introducing yourself to someone new can be tough, but there are so many ways you can do it!
You could introduce yourself formally by saying something like “Hello, I’m your name here.” If they don’t know who you are, this is the best option. But if you know them or have talked before then just go for a friendly “Hey!”. They might say hi back and then start talking about what they’ve been up to lately.

Even if the other person is being quiet, it’s still important that you are friendly. People will be more likely to talk to you if you’re nice! If they seem pretty angry or upset, it’s best not to bother them. They might just want some space so let them have it! But on the other hand there are so many people who could use a good friend - you might be just what they need.
If you want to start small talk with someone, try asking them about their favorite sports team or if the weather is nice lately. This is because it shows that you care enough to ask them about something they like! And don’t forget to give your opinion on the topic too! If they agree with you, tell them why. If they disagree, ask them for their reasons and then explain why you still think you’re right.
Just remember that it is always good to listen carefully if the other person is talking as well.
3. Watch for signs that they want to talk
Sometimes another person wants to talk, but is afraid to interrupt you. Here are some signs that they want to talk:
- If they are looking around, looking back at you, or giving you side glances
- If they are making eye contact with you
- If you said something that made them laugh
- If they’ve been standing there for a while, waiting for a pause in your conversation.
- If they keep looking at you and then look away
It’s not always easy to start a conversation with someone you don’t know well. There are many ways to do it, but the best way is by getting their attention and making them feel comfortable around you so they’ll want to get to know you better.
Remember: You can introduce yourself or ask about something that interests both of you - like what music they’re listening too! And small talk never hurts either - just make sure your questions aren’t invasive or offensive before launching into them!
