Roman mythology

Roman mythology is the body of traditional stories pertaining to ancient Rome’s legendary origins and religious system, as represented in the literature and visual arts of the Romans. "Roman mythology" may also refer to the modern study of these representations and to the subject matter as represented in the literature and art of other cultures in any period.

The Romans usually treated their traditional narratives as historical, even when these had miraculous or supernatural elements. The stories are often concerning the founding of Rome, its early history, or the lives of its legendary heroes.

Accordingly, Rome’s early myths and legends also embody the collective values of Roman society during the Regal period: concepts of duty, loyalty, obedience, bravery, and victory.

While the Romans worshiped their gods and goddesses, they also believed that these beings had human qualities and emotions. Therefore, the Roman gods and goddesses are often portrayed as having very human-like characteristics.

For example, the goddess Juno is often shown as a jealous wife who constantly nags her husband, Jupiter. And Hercules, while he is known for his great strength, is also shown to be rather foolish at times.

Despite their human-like qualities, the Roman gods and goddesses are still powerful beings who should be respected and worshipped.

Roman mythology vs. Greek mythology

It is often claimed that Roman mythology is simply a copy of Greek mythology. However, there are some notable differences between the two pantheons.

For example, the Roman god Jupiter is equivalent to the Greek god Zeus. However, Zeus’ wife Hera is not equivalent to Jupiter’s wife, Juno. Instead, the equivalent goddess is called Ops or Opis.

Another example is the Roman god Mars, who is equivalent to the Greek god Ares. However, while Ares was often depicted as a violent and bloodthirsty god, Mars was usually portrayed as a more noble and honorable deity.

So while there are some similarities between Roman and Greek mythology, there are also some notable differences.
