Euphoria is an Emmy-winning drama that was first released in June of 2019 on HBO and is based on an Israeli miniseries called “Euphoria” as well.
The story revolves around a group of high school students and their struggles with love, addiction, trauma, and much more. It has been praised for its accurate and gritty portrayal of modern teenage life.
The show has a diverse cast of characters, which is one of the things that makes it so special. Euphoria is definitely not your typical American teen drama TV, and it’s definitely worth watching.

Euphoria is a straight-edged teen drama. It gained a lot of attention because it consists of different styles of different shows. It has comedy, seriousness, and lots of emotions and is all about making a statement about drug addiction and abuse.
It’s rated R-18 because of the showcase of drug use, nudity, violence, and language. Although it’s a teen show, every person who has plans on watching this show should know that Euphoria ultimately pushes the boundaries on sensitive topics such as drugs, sex, and even sexual harassment.

The pilot episode of Euphoria starts off with Ruby “Rue” Bennett, played by Zendaya, coming out of rehab. It’s also shown in the first episode that she was suffering from several mental illnesses.
Rue is the protagonist of the show and is also the narrator. It is portrayed in the show how Rue is a recovering drug addict who is just struggling to get her life together.
At the last party, before the new school year starts, Rue meets Jules Vaughn. Jules is the new girl in town who is transgender. Rue eventually ends up somewhat falling in love with Jules and becomes very protective over her.
Maddy Perez, played by Alexa Demie, is the confident and strong character of Euphoria. “For as long as Maddy could remember, everybody loved her.” (Rue’s voiceover)

Maddy was a confident girl from a very young age, and it was because of this which was why she entered beauty pageants. Soon after, she was prohibited from doing any pageants because of an issue with a coach.
After watching Casino, Maddy idolized Ginger McKenna, which became the reason why she began to manipulate men (e.g., Nate Jacobs) into buying her expensive things. She found that making men feel powerful and confident (sometimes with sex) is the key to doing so. This is also one of the reasons why Maddy has toxic relationships around her.
Later on in high school, she became a cheerleader at East Highland High School alongside Cassie Howard.
Cassie Howard, played by Sydney Sweeney, is Maddy Perez’s best friend and fellow cheerleader. Cassie was born into a very religious family, which has led her to have a lot of sexual repressions.

She is also an attractive girl who is obsessed with being perfect and pleasing everyone around her, which causes her to have an eating disorder. It is revealed that she has been bulimic for years and has been hiding it from everyone.
Cassie is a very bubbly person who, because of all the trauma she went through, wants nothing but to be loved back. She is an emotional person who loves with her whole heart. This, however, often leads to her heartbreaks.
Cassie is dating Chris McKay, who is on the football team, and she is also best friends with Jules Vaughn.
Jules Vaughn, played by Hunter Schafer, is a new student at East Highland High School. She is a transgender girl with a fun personality and a carefree approach to life.
In her early years, Jules greatly struggled with living a double life. So after dealing with this for so long, she is finally able to go through the process of transitioning and starts to live her life as the person she truly is.

Jules moves in with her dad after her mom kicked her out of the house for coming out as transgender. It is also revealed that she has been through a lot of therapy and has been on hormone replacement therapy for two years.
Jules is best friends with Cassie Howard, and she is also dating Nate Jacobs, who is a bit of an antisocial person. This became quite an issue for Nate’s dad, Cal Jacobs, as it was revealed in season one that Cal and Jules hooked up for a bit.
Lexi Howard, played by Maude Apatow, is Cassie’s younger sister. Lexi was close friends with Rue and was the first to witness Rue’s intake of drugs.
Being in the shadow of her sister Cassie and living in a household with an alcoholic dad and a religious mom, she eventually just learned to sit on the sidelines.
It was also because of this that Lexi became more focused on supporting the people around her, which was why she was more tolerant of Rue’s behavior than most people.

Lexi is seen dating Fezco, played by Angus Cloud, who is Rue’s drug dealer. While Fezco is a high school dropout who sells drugs to teenagers, there’s no denying that the Lexi-Fezco relationship has become a fan favorite.
Kat Hernandez, played by Barbie Ferreira, is a plus-sized girl who is extremely confident in her body. At the beginning of the show, she was a shy teenager who was extremely insecure.
Kat had officially gone in a relationship with Ethan in season 02, but in episode 06 of the same season, Ethan breaks up with her. This event eventually leads Kat to become an online sex worker, which helps boost her confidence in her body.
Kat is the creative girl in the group who is great at writing. It is shown how she becomes a fanfic writer on Tumblr.
Euphoria isn’t a show for everyone; it’s deep, it’s graphic, and it can be triggering. However, it’s an important show that sheds light on many important topics such as mental health, addiction, sexual assault, and more.
Furthermore, Euphoria was able to get an incredible cast of characters who were able to portray these amazing characters. Despite the complexity of each character from season to season, they just got everybody hooked.
