Can you describe a word without saying the obvious? Taboo is the classic word-guessing party game where you have to get your team to guess a word, but the most helpful clues are completely off-limits.

Each card shows a target word you need to describe and a list of forbidden words you absolutely cannot say. Think fast, get creative, and try not to accidentally blurt out a taboo word under pressure. It’s the kind of game that turns quiet friends into animated storytellers and confident talkers into stammering messes.

Our free online Taboo game lets you play instantly in your browser — no app download, no account, no setup. Just gather your group, pick a category, and start the round.

Free Online Taboo Game

Skip the card box and play Taboo directly on your phone or tablet. Our online Taboo word generator gives you hundreds of words across multiple categories, complete with forbidden word lists for each card.

Every round is different because cards are shuffled randomly. Whether you’re playing at a house party, a family gathering, or a team-building event, you’ll never run out of fresh content.

Taboo Game Categories

Choose a category that matches your group’s vibe. Each category contains unique word cards with carefully chosen forbidden words that make describing them a real challenge.

Classic

The standard Taboo experience with everyday words. Great for mixed groups and first-time players. You’ll get a solid mix of objects, activities, and concepts that everyone can relate to.

Pop Culture

Movies, music, celebrities, TV shows, and internet culture. This category rewards players who stay up to date with entertainment and trending topics.

Science & Nature

From biology to space, this category tests your ability to explain scientific concepts without the obvious terminology. Perfect for trivia lovers and curious minds.

Food & Drink

Describe dishes, ingredients, and drinks without the words that immediately come to mind. Harder than it sounds when “chocolate” is forbidden and you’re trying to describe a brownie.

How to Play Taboo Online

Taboo is one of the easiest party games to learn but one of the hardest to master. Here’s how to get started with our online version:

1. Form two teams

Split your group into two teams. Try to balance them evenly — mixing ages and personalities makes the game more interesting. You need at least 4 players total (2 per team), but Taboo really shines with 6 or more.

2. Pick a category

Choose from our available categories. If your group can’t decide, start with Classic and switch it up between rounds.

3. Choose the describer

One player from the active team becomes the describer. They’ll see the target word and the list of forbidden words on screen. Only the describer should look at the screen.

4. Describe without the forbidden words

The describer explains the target word to their teammates using any words they want — except the forbidden ones listed on the card. Teammates shout out guesses as fast as they can.

5. Score and rotate

When the team guesses correctly, tap Next for a new word. If the describer gets stuck, they can skip. After the timer runs out, count up correct guesses. Then it’s the other team’s turn.

Why Play Taboo at Your Next Party

Taboo works because it strips away the safety net of obvious words and forces you to think on your feet. Unlike trivia games where one person dominates with knowledge, Taboo levels the playing field — knowing the word is easy, describing it without the obvious terms is where the real challenge lives.

It’s also one of the few party games that’s genuinely funny to watch. The describer flailing for words, teammates shouting wrong answers, the opposing team gleefully catching forbidden words — every round creates moments worth laughing about later.

Taboo works for almost any occasion: birthday parties, game nights, family holidays, office team-building events, college dorm hangouts, or a casual evening with friends. The rules are simple enough for kids to play, but the forbidden word mechanic keeps it challenging for adults.

Since our version is browser-based, you don’t need to buy anything or download an app. Everyone plays on one shared screen, which keeps the energy in the room instead of splitting attention across individual phones.
