Can you describe a word without saying the obvious? Taboo is the classic word-guessing party game where you have to get your team to guess a word, but the most helpful clues are off-limits.
Each card shows a word you need to describe and a list of forbidden words you absolutely cannot say. Think fast, get creative, and try not to accidentally blurt out a taboo word under pressure.
How to Play Taboo Online
- Split into two teams. The more players, the more chaotic and fun.
- Pick a category and start the round.
- Describe the word on screen to your teammates without using any of the forbidden words listed below it.
- Beat the clock. You have limited time to get as many words as possible.
- Press Next to skip a word or move on after your team guesses correctly.
Taboo Rules
- No forbidden words. If you say one, the other team gets a point.
- No gestures or sound effects. This is a word game, not charades.
- No “rhymes with” or “starts with” clues. Describe the concept, not the word itself.
- No part of the word. If the word is “sunflower,” you can’t say “sun” or “flower.”
Tips for Winning
- Think of associations the word has that aren’t on the forbidden list.
- Use examples and scenarios. Instead of defining, paint a picture.
- Stay calm under pressure. The timer makes everyone panic, which is half the fun.
- Know your teammates. Inside jokes and shared references are your secret weapon.
